Statement:
At the beginning of 2022, I participated in the DVC study aboard program in Italy, teaching photography and art history for three months in Florence. Upon arrival, I quickly realized that the normal tourist population was
non-existent, and I experienced a version of Italy that was equal parts somber and spectacular. I spent countless hours wandering quiet streets contemplating how I could translate the phenomenological into something photographic; trying to locate the ever-present gap between “how it is” and “how it is pictured”. This approach led to the production of images that reflect upon history, time, light, belief, permanence, and my need to ground myself through images.
