Mythomorphic statement Sept.2026
Mythomorphic explores themes of ancient civilizations, personal mythology and homeland, and the way that far- reaching roots extend over time and place.
As the granddaughter of Greek immigrants, I find myself drawn to the beauty, language, history and art of this Mediterranean country where one is literally walking on top of thousands of years of human civilization. As a ceramic artist, this history is especially compelling because of the longevity of fired clay as a primary record of the lives and culture of the people who lived on this beautiful and challenging land.
All of the work in this show has been influenced by my travels in Greece and research of ancient ceramic form. Zoomorphic sculpture, vessels and figurines are my responses to my observations of ritual, functional and symbolic expressions of Greek art. The Judgement of Shards series is an interactive political piece where visitors to the gallery are invited to cast their anti-vote by inscribing a name on a clay shard. This was a practice in ancient Athens to rid the city of a potential tyrant and to uphold democracy. The word “ostracism” comes from the name of these shards called “ostraka”.
I am thrilled to be taking a group of students to Athens in summer of 2027 for a 3 week study abroad program: Ancient Greek Ceramics in Athens. For more information, email me at kkearns@dvc.edu
