"Passion" is a word that I use when thinking about art and is the personal drive that compels my interest in photography. In 1988 I put aside black and white, and began photographing in color while trying to retain a sense of the mythology of space and surreal qualities that typifies my earlier and ongoing work.”
-John Spence Weir
John Spence Weir was one of the founders of the Photography Department at Diablo Valley. He, along with his colleagues Jack Millick and Michael Harris poured the foundations that saw those courses impact, in a profound way, and influence thousands of students during his tenure at Diablo Valley College. His direction and encouragement launched careers and led to many of those student’s work being in permanent collections of galleries, museums, and private collections around the globe.
The photographs shown here are examples of a lifetime of dedication to a visual anthropology, as seen through the eyes of John Spence Weir.
